This park comprises, among other areas, the Amber Mountain Special Reserve, covering 4,800 hectares (11,860 acres), covered with an evergreen rainforest and isolated from the surrounding dry plains.
The climate is humid and tropical, differing from the rest of the dry, arid region.
It is the place that receives the most abundant rainfall in all of Madagascar, making it an authentic botanical paradise!
The beauty of the park is enhanced by volcanic lakes, waterfalls up to 80 m high, luxuriant forests, and magnificent high-altitude spots offering views of Antsiranana Bay.
Among the lemurs are Sanford’s lemur (Eulemur fulvus sanfordi) and the crowned lemur (Eulemur coronatus), both diurnal, and 5 nocturnal species, including the Eastern grey bamboo lemur (Hapalemur griseus) and the extremely particular Aye-Aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis).
Other park inhabitants include the small carnivore known as the fosa, chameleons such as the Nasutus and Brevicornis and the tiny Brookesia; also, geckos, lizards, frogs, around 75 bird species including herons, ibis, sparrow-hawks, hawks, and parrots…
