MAROJEJY NATIONAL PARK

Situated in north-eastern Madagascar, 60 km from the town of Sambava, on the road connecting it with AndapaMarojejy Mountain reaches an altitude of 2,132 m, with a range of different climates, flora, and fauna.

There are few temperature variations between the winter (mean 19°C), characterized by trade-winds bringing rains that are generally light in intensity, and the summer (mean 25°C), when the monsoons bring stormy, but warmer, rains.

The vegetation and fauna show various aspects in succession:

– the evergreen low-altitude rainforest up to 800 m, with trees 25-30 m tall, with palms, ferns, bamboo, and Ravinala (traveller’s tree). The exploration of this part of the forest offers glimpses of reptiles and amphibians such as the Mantella laevigata frog (green-backed Mantella), endemic to the park; in addition, 2 species of lemurs, the Hapalemur griseus griseus (Eastern grey bamboo lemur) and the Eulemur fulvus albifrons (white-fronted brown lemur), and the magnificent bird known as the Blue Coua. At 450 m altitude is the Mantella Camp.

– the mountain rainforest up to 1,450 m, with more rainfall and an even more exuberant vegetation, trees 18-25 m tall, and an abundance of flowers, mosses, and lichens on the ground and tree trunks, large tree ferns, and above all the Marojejya insignis palm, endemic to the park. In this part of the forest it is possible to encounter the extremely rare Simpona lemur, or Silky Sifaka (Propithecus diadema candidus), with its beautiful white coat. At 775 m altitude is the Marojejia Camp. At 1,250 m altitude is the Simpona Camp, the « base camp » for the climb to the peak, which takes 1 day.

– the high-mountain sclerophyll forest up to 1,800 m, with trees that do not arrive over 10 m in height, and the ground covered with a thick carpet of mosses and lichens.

– higher up, and as far as the peak, the low rock vegetation is often above the clouds…

The main ethnic group is the Tsimihety.
