ANKARANA NATIONAL PARK

This beautiful reserve is located south of Antsiranana and occupies a vast area.
The East entrance is on the National Road 6, about 2½ hours by paved road from the city, near the village of Mahamasina, where there are some hotels and rudimental camps of simple huts with shared bathroom facilities.
From here, with a half-day’s excursion, it is possible to visit the Tsingy Meva, following an itinerary through a suggestive habitat, along riverbeds, invaded by limestone and volcanic rocks that plunge into a labyrinth of underground caverns (more than 100 km explored up to now), climbing up between the masses, amidst which a particular vegetation grows, crossing the rocky pinnacles along wooden footbridges, to reach small terraces situated on the top of the Tsingy, from which it is possible to admire these fantastic rock formations, an ancient coral reef from the Jurassic Period.
There are other possible excursions, such as the 3-hour trip to the Tsingy Rary, through a tunnel-like forest, at the end of which is a vast, breathtaking stretch of sharp, pointed rocks ; this excursion is recommended for the morning, in order to be in the best position with respect to the sun.

In the interior there is also the luxuriant deciduous forest inhabited by around ten species of lemurs, among the most beautiful in Madagascar: the red-fronted lemur (Eulemur fulvus) and the crowned lemur (Eulemur coronatus), both diurnal; and various nocturnal species such as the Eastern grey bamboo lemur (Hapalemur griseus), the tiny grey mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus), and the Aye-Aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis). There are also around one hundred bird species, half of which are endemic to Madagascar (the White-breasted Mesite, Mesitornis variegata, is one of the rarest birds in the world!), fosas (rare small carnivores), and also chameleons, crocodiles…

IMPORTANT

Caves, tunnels, and underground rivers are of particular importance and significance for the animistic native populations, and are therefore to be considered sacred places.
